ACF vs Elementor: Which Should You Use for a Custom WordPress Site?

ACF vs Elementor for custom WordPress sites

Quick answer: In the ACF vs Elementor debate, choose Elementor if your team wants to design and edit pages visually without code, and choose ACF with a custom theme if your site has structured content (listings, team members, events, products) and you want the lightest, fastest pages. Many of my client projects use both: ACF stores the data and Elementor Pro displays it.

I build WordPress sites both ways for clients every month, so this guide is based on what happens after launch: how easy the site is to edit, how fast it loads, what breaks during updates and what it costs to maintain.

What is the difference between ACF and Elementor?

They solve different problems. Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) adds custom fields to WordPress, such as a price, a date, a gallery or a repeating list of features. It decides what data a page holds. A developer then writes theme templates that decide how that data looks.

Elementor is a visual page builder. It decides how a page looks: you drag sections, headings, images and buttons onto the page and edit them in place, with the result visible as you work.

So the real question is not which plugin is better, but whether your project is mostly about structured content or mostly about freely designed pages.

How editing feels day to day

With an ACF theme, an editor opens a post and sees simple fields: event date, venue, ticket link, speaker photo. They cannot accidentally change fonts, spacing or colors, because the template controls the design. Adding the fiftieth event takes the same two minutes as the first.

With Elementor, the editor sees the actual page and can change anything. That freedom is great for a marketing team testing new landing pages, but on a large site it often leads to slightly different buttons, spacing and headings on every page.

When should you choose Elementor?

  • Your marketing team builds new landing pages often and does not want to wait for a developer.
  • The site is mostly unique pages, not hundreds of similar items.
  • You need to launch quickly on a smaller budget.
  • You are happy to invest in speed optimization to keep the site fast.

When should you choose ACF with a custom theme?

  • The site has repeating content types: properties, courses, doctors, case studies, events.
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals matter for SEO or paid ads.
  • You want editors to fill in fields, not redesign pages, so the brand stays consistent.
  • You expect the site to grow for years and want fewer plugins to maintain.

Example: the same events website built both ways

Imagine a training company that runs 40 workshops a year. Built only with Elementor, each workshop page is designed by duplicating the previous one and editing the text. It works, but dates, prices and booking links live inside page layouts, so listing upcoming workshops or hiding past ones needs manual work.

Built with ACF, each workshop is a custom post type with fields for date, price, trainer and booking link. The listing page sorts itself by date, past workshops can be hidden automatically, and the design is identical everywhere. I show exactly how in my guide to ordering an Elementor Loop Grid by an ACF date field.

Can you use ACF and Elementor together?

Yes, and it is often the best of both. ACF stores the structured data, and Elementor Pro shows it through dynamic tags and Loop Grid templates. Your team keeps the visual editor for landing pages, while repeatable content stays clean and consistent. The trade-off is that you now maintain two systems, so keep add-ons to a minimum.

ACF vs Elementor for speed and SEO

A well-built ACF theme almost always produces a lighter page, because it loads only the HTML and CSS the design needs. Elementor sites can still pass Core Web Vitals, but they need more work: containers instead of nested sections, fewer add-ons, optimized images, caching and careful use of animations.

Search engines care about the result, not the tool. Either approach can rank if the page is fast, the content answers the search and the site is easy to crawl.

Maintenance, updates and long-term cost

Most Elementor sites I am asked to fix have the same problem: three or four add-on packs installed for one widget each. Every update is a small risk, and a single abandoned add-on can break pages. An ACF theme has fewer moving parts, so updates are usually uneventful.

On the other hand, changing an ACF layout means asking a developer, while Elementor lets you change it yourself. Over three years, the cheaper option is usually the one that matches how often your design changes.

How much does each option cost?

As a rough guide from my own projects, a simple Elementor landing page starts around $150 to $200, while a multi-page business site with an ACF custom theme usually costs $500 to $2,500 depending on the number of templates and features. See my services and pricing for current rates.

Moving from Elementor to ACF later

Many sites start on Elementor and outgrow it. The move is easiest when content was already stored in custom fields; if everything lives inside Elementor layouts, the content has to be copied into new fields page by page. If you expect to grow, store repeatable data in ACF from day one, even if Elementor displays it.

Checklist: 6 questions to decide

  1. Will you publish many items of the same type (events, listings, products)?
  2. Who will edit the site, and how often will the design change?
  3. How important are page speed and Core Web Vitals for your traffic?
  4. What is your budget for the build, and for the next three years?
  5. Do you need a developer on call, or must your team be independent?
  6. Could the site grow into a directory, portal or membership site?

Mostly “many items”, “speed matters” and “will grow”: choose ACF. Mostly “we redesign often” and “small budget”: choose Elementor.

My recommendation

If you are a small business that needs a good-looking site quickly, start with Elementor. If your website is a core part of the business, with lots of structured content and a need for speed, invest in an ACF custom theme. If you are not sure, send me your design or current site and I will tell you which approach fits.

Frequently asked questions

Is ACF better than Elementor?

Neither is better for every project. ACF is better for structured content and fast, lightweight custom themes. Elementor is better when non-developers need to design and edit page layouts visually.

Can I use ACF and Elementor together?

Yes. Elementor Pro can display ACF fields through dynamic tags and Loop Grid templates, so you store structured data with ACF and design the layout in Elementor.

Is Elementor bad for SEO?

No. Elementor sites can rank well. They tend to load more CSS and JavaScript than a hand-coded theme, so they need more care with speed optimization to pass Core Web Vitals.

Do I need to know code to use ACF?

To create fields you do not, but to display them in a theme you need basic PHP, or a builder that reads ACF fields. That is why ACF projects are usually built by a developer.

Which is cheaper, ACF or Elementor?

An Elementor site is usually cheaper and faster to launch. An ACF custom theme costs more up front but is easier to keep fast and consistent as the site grows.
